Most of the time they are removed from their intended audience, as if they were supposed to stand on their own, which they were never meant to. They're removed from any context. I suppose that for some that allows them to apply their own context to the quote or whatever. But what is the difference in carrying around this quote on your cyber life and carrying around some sort of comfort blanket or other such novelty in real life? As in the short passage above, why do we need these things? Why do they seem to give us comfort, and are they any different than the material crap we carry around? Aren't they just more bumper stickers? When I share text on my tumblr page, it's usually something I've been reading and studying, something that resonates with me and is often not a one line quote but rather a paragraph or entire sutra. I share these things as much for myself as for anyone else who happens to come across them. The worst for me is when someone takes a beautiful photo or drawing or some such art and plasters a quote across the front, as if the piece of art was unable to stand on its own somehow.Let's not try to fill things up so much, we're already so, so full. :)

I’ve never really been a fan of quotes, or inspirational sayings or those types of things. I had highlighted the sentence "It takes courage and an inner determination to live without concepts, but the concept-free mind is the mind of the Buddha, enlightenment," was about ready to share (impatient that I am), and then scrolled down to finish reading only to find that the same words were what really caught your attention in the text. The trap or virus of language and conceptual thought indeed...

A comment from our previous blog, by sharanam ( @itsalldhamma:twitter ): Carlos, wonderful post.
